The basque museums is a two-year performative project comprising six major exhibitions, eighty-two new performances and the reactivation of four seminal works, twelve educational projects, and the incorporation of several key artworks into the permanent collections of different institutions central to Basque contemporary art.
From June 2025 to June 2027, various museums, art centres, and venues across the Basque Country open their doors to Abel Azcona. From 27 June to 30 September 2025, the Montehermoso Cultural Centre in Vitoria-Gasteiz presented a retrospective exhibition dedicated to Abel Azcona. Under the title Monument to the Family, and curated by Daniel Castillejo, the exhibition served as a closing chapter for the artist’s most autobiographical and family-related works, while also marking Azcona’s return to museums and art centres throughout the Basque Country, in cities such as Pamplona, Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, and San Sebastián.

An exhibition featuring a broad selection of Abel Azcona’s artworks opened at the Montehermoso Cultural Centre in June 2025. In parallel, a second exhibition devoted to the artist’s complete archive was presented. Both exhibitions were accompanied by two days of performance and various parallel projects, including the creation and premiere of a documentary film and the publication of a catalogue raisonné bringing together Azcona’s complete body of work from the past twenty-five years.
In 2026, Azkuna Zentroa hosted the latest activation of Mamá, a sound performance in which Azcona screams until he loses his voice. Previously presented in various museums, the work was also activated within the framework of this project at La Galea and in the caves and mountains of Gorbea, Txindoki and Anboto, places associated with Mari, the mother goddess of Basque mythology. For the first time, five works from the Art as Autobiography series were activated in Bilbao, Vitoria and Pamplona. In the latter city, the exhibition Twenty Essential Works was also created, in which several students from the Pamplona School of Art reactivated Azcona’s works as a tribute to his twenty-five-year career. The exhibition was presented at the Sala de Armas of Pamplona’s Ciudadela.
La escucha is a long-duration performance lasting more than one thousand hours—the equivalent of forty-two consecutive days—which took place between 26 November 2025 and 22 June 2026. In a radical exercise in listening, Azcona sat opposite different people in museums across Europe and Latin America to receive their accounts of traumatic experiences: stories of sexual violence, childhood abuse, abandonment and other life experiences marked by pain. After years of presenting performances centred on his own autobiographical narrative, Azcona places himself in the position of the receiver. Through listening and writing, he transforms each testimony into hundreds of handwritten pages. With an average of two to three hours of listening per participant and between twenty and thirty sheets written consecutively, La escucha comprises more than four hundred participants who bring their bodies into the work through self-exploration and language.
The more than twelve thousand handwritten pages construct a collective account of different forms of violence. The work seeks to make these experiences visible, give them words and sublimate them through performance: through the presence of the body and the transformation of testimony into visible matter.
The project was activated in a significant number of the main Basque museums: Artium Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basque Country and the Museum of Fine Arts of Álava, in Vitoria; San Telmo Museum and Tabakalera, in Donostia-San Sebastián; the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Sala Rekalde, in Bilbao; and the Museum of Navarra, in Pamplona.
The first activation carried out in collaboration with the Easton Foundation took place around the work Maman, at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Tate Modern in London. It was a long-duration work lasting more than one hundred hours, in which Azcona once again sat on the original chair where he had performed his first performance twenty-five years earlier. On this occasion, his body was welcomed and supported by Louise Bourgeois’s sculptures presented at the Guggenheim, Tate Modern and the National Gallery of Canada.
In November 2026, the project’s most important performance will be activated, conceived as the return to and closure of the Navarrese artist’s family narrative in his own territory. Over several days and throughout more than one hundred hours, Azcona will handwrite the entirety of his family and personal narrative in an installation situated at the centre of the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum. The complete narrative will subsequently be published by a Catalan publishing house. Also in 2026, as part of his journey through and return to the Basque museums, Azcona will bring the work Chosen Mothers to a close in collaboration with Esther Ferrer. In 2027, a major closing exhibition of this cycle, organised by Getxo Cultura, will open at the Punta Begoña Galleries.

The Montehermoso Cultural Center hosts an exhibition by Abel Azcona, one of the most radical and committed voices in contemporary art on the international stage. This show brings together a significant selection of his works and performances, pieces that have marked his trajectory over the past years and that form a body of work that is profoundly autobiographical, political, and visceral. With titles such as La savia, Empatía y prostitución, Exégesis de la madre, or Volver al padre, the exhibition traces the fundamental themes that run through his work: childhood, the body, structural violence, trauma, identity, and resistance. This exhibition is a vital synthesis, a process of reconciliation and confrontation with his own history and with the systems of power he has challenged through art. Azcona transforms his biography into raw material for an artistic practice that challenges the viewer through discomfort, truth, and memory. This anthology condenses years of work at the limits of performance art, blurring the boundaries between the personal and the political, the intimate and the collective. The exhibition is also an invitation to pause, to face pain, vulnerability, and resilience head-on; to ask ourselves what place art occupies when it becomes both testimony and struggle.
ABEL AZCONA. THE FAREWELL TO THE FAMILY
Twelve brief actions to say goodbye, accept absence, and embrace permanence. Thursday, September 18, 2025, Montehermoso, Vitoria.
As part of ABEL AZCONA. MONUMENT TO THE FAMILY, we find an intimate, performative act in twelve actions, transforming the museum space into a site of closure and resolution of family conflicts. All of Azcona’s works are activated as performative processes in different stages. In this way, the artist—through document, object, word, body, and installation—will inhabit the exhibition in confinement for a week as a means of closing certain works. He will carry out the final guided tour and bid farewell to each piece in the show, read in intimacy words about the wound and the abolition of the family or his adoption and complete abandonment file, close the sound piece of calling his mother until losing his voice, begin a process of self-care through self-cradling, continue the process with his sister Soraya, and say a definitive farewell to his father through burning and sculptural creation. He will also encounter for the first time his second mother—the woman who prostituted his body as a child—and hold her hand on the pedestals, request the public’s help to resolve the process of the adoptive family, begin a new piece in collaboration with fifty children stolen during the Franco regime, collectively reclaim the death of Mendieta by connecting it to the violence suffered by his own mother, and carry out a final encounter with pedestals in a closing act featuring bertso and improvisation.
ABEL AZCONA.
