THE ABANDONERS
The second action carried out at the Artillery Barracks was the first activation in Spain of the work The Abandoners, which had begun a month earlier in the city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. After two years of collecting more than fifty original letters and writings written by mothers at the moment they abandoned their newborn babies, Azcona invited mothers—some by invitation and others forcibly—to attend the room as spectators. The mothers read the abandonment letters over and over again, interacting with the process, the reading, and the feelings.
It was an unforgettable moment that we experienced with Abel Azcona in this action with mothers. Without prior notice, he invited the present mothers and other women sensitized to abandonment to sit in chairs and read a text that we did not know, which he handed out at that moment. These texts were the original words (real texts) of mothers who abandoned their newborn babies and left minimal information for those who found them. Words full of pain and fear. The very writing of the testimonies—their pauses, their minimal length—already expressed everything. Each of us had to read our text one after the other and let those words occupy us. It was like a mantra. On the first round, I felt the air electrified with pain. The audience could barely hold back their tears. In the following rounds, something began to open up—perhaps the tears slightly softened the atmosphere… something was happening that we didn’t know what it was… maybe a feeling of compassion, of understanding, also of anger. Abel’s final embrace allowed all that fury and love to be gathered.

LAS ABANDONADORAS
La segunda acción desarrollada en El Cuartel de Artilleria fue la primera activación en España de la obra de Las Abandonadoras inicada un mes antes en la ciudad de Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Tras la recopilación durante dos años de mas de cincuenta cartas y escritos originales redactadas por madres en el momento de abandonar a sus bebés recién nacidos; Azcona invita a madres, algunos por invitación y otras de manera forzada, al acudir a la sala como espectadoras. Las madres leen las cartas de abandono una y otra vez interaccionando el proceso, la lectura y el sentir.
Fue un momento inolvidable el que vivimos con Abel Azcona en esta acción con Madres. Sin previo aviso nos invitó a participar a las madres presentes y a otras mujeres sensibilizadas con el abandono a sentarnos en unas sillas y a leer un texto que no conocíamos y que él nos repartió en ese momento . Esos textos eran las palabras originales ( textos reales) de madres que abandonan a sus bebés recién nacidos y dejan mínimas informaciones para quienes los encuentran. Palabras llenas de dolor y de miedo. La propia redacción de los testimonios, sus pausas, su mínima extensión, ya expresaba todo. Cada una de nosotras teníamos que leer nuestro texto una detrás de otra y dejar que esas palabras nos ocuparan. Era un mantra. En la primera vuelta sentí el aire electrizado de dolor. La audiencia a penas contenía las lágrimas. En las siguientes vueltas algo empezó a abrirse, quizá las lágrimas humedecieron un poco el ambiente… algo pasaba que no sabíamos qué era… quizá una sensación de compasión, de comprensión, también de enfado. El abrazo final de Abel permitió recoger toda esa furia y ese amor.
